Hung jury in cricketer's rape trial

UPDATED 6.23PM The rape trial of Northern Districts cricketer Scott Kuggeleijn has ended in a hung jury.

The 24-year-old has been on trial for eight days at the Hamilton District Court, for allegedly raping a 21-year-old female in May last year.

However the jury has been unable to reach an unanimous verdict.

Judge Philip Connell thanked the jury for being so attentive throughout their time and told Mr Kuggeleijn it was an unfortunate conclusion to the trial.

Scott Kuggeleijn has been remanded on bail until the 8th of September at 2:15 for a call over.

He and his family refused to comment on the case, as they left the court.

Mr Kuggeleijn says the just wants to go home.

His lawyer Philip Morgan QC also declined to comment about the hung jury decision as he left the court.
