Police say the murder conviction against Quinton Winders shows what can be done when the public comes forward with information.
A jury found Winders guilty yesterday afternoon of the murder of stop-go George Taiaroa, following a five week trial at the High Court at Rotorua.
Superintendent Tim Anderson said more than 130 witnesses provided information to Police about the case.
"We asked for information in regards to the blue Cherokee and information from New Zealanders. They answered the call."
The murder investigation also involved more a hundred Police staff from across the North Island.
The family of Mr Taiaroa have thanked New Zealanders for their outpouring of support.
Taiaroa family spokesperson Ani Mikaere said friends, relatives and complete strangers have offered gestures of kindness.
"A husband, father, grandfather workmate and friend. Nothing can bring him back but his legacy will endure. His whanau are committed to moving forward, to living lives that he would be proud of."
Winders will be sentenced to November 2.
