  • One person is in custody after a fight in Mt Wellington involving four people.
  • Police found one person with serious injuries, who was taken to hospital.
  • Police are still investigating the incident.

A woman was heard screaming out “the pain, the pain” from where she lay injured on the road moments after a suspected stabbing in a residential suburb.

Police confirmed one person is in custody and another person is in a serious condition in hospital following a fight involving four people in Mt Wellington, Auckland.

A 24-year-old student, who asked not to be named, said her family was “traumatised” by the events overnight.

The Boakes Rd resident said at 8.50pm on Thursday, she heard a group of people yelling at each other as they walked down the street.

“We heard screaming and we were like, ‘What the heck’,” she said.

“There was four people fighting and they kind of ended up on that side of the corner of the road, and the screaming just was getting louder and louder.

“I don’t know exactly what they were arguing about, but it was something really silly about like disrespecting partners or something.”

She went outside to see what was going on, but things quickly turned violent.

“Then they were screaming, ‘Oh, there’s a knife, there’s a knife’, and so we ran back inside, and that’s when we rang the police because we were like, ‘Okay, this is really out of hand’.

“Between that time being on the phone to the police, there was a person lying on the ground, and they’d been stabbed.

“She was screaming for help and saying, ‘the pain, the pain’, and we instantly knew that she had been stabbed.”

She said about 10 police cars, three ambulances and a fire engine responded to the incident very quickly.

“It was absolutely insane. Honestly, I have never seen police come here that quick in my life.

“The weirdest part was just like... [the people who were with the woman] didn’t run away, they just stood around.”

Her family didn’t get to sleep until 1am as police detectives scoured the street for evidence following the incident.

“I’ve never experienced anything like that, but I think also the worst part was just hearing someone... lying on the ground screaming for help.”

Police were called to an address on Boakes Rd, Mt Wellington, at 9pm following a report of four people fighting, a police spokesperson said.

“Upon arrival, one person was located with serious injuries.

“One person was quickly taken into custody nearby and the victim was transported to hospital in a serious condition.”

A St John spokesperson said one ambulance, one rapid response and one manager to the incident.

“We have transported one person to Auckland City Hospital in a serious condition.”

Last night, officers were positioned on either side of the scene as police photographers and detectives worked through the crime scene.

Detectives could be seen examining a section of the footpath outside the address following the incident.
