A popular Christchurch road link is soon to reopen, eight years on from the earthquakes.

The Christchurch City Council says the road link between Sumner and Lyttelton will open to traffic at the end of March.

Transport Planning and Delivery manager Lynette Ellis says it's a milestone with over-dimension freight and dangerous goods convoys no longer being forced through the tunnel.

"Reinstating the road has been a massive undertaking, including blasting and removing 100-thousand cubic metres of rock."

Ellis says the road will reconnect Lyttelton and Sumner communities, and open up Port Hills access for cyclists.
