Christchurch police are hunting for an offender who crashed into a police car while fleeing.

Police attempted to pull over a vehicle-of-interest in Aranui shortly after 7am.

But a spokesperson says they driver decided to run, hitting a police car on the way.

There was a brief pursuit but police abandoned the chase due to the nature of the driving.

They are making enquiries to locate the driver.
