Police have arrested a fleeing driver who hit several police cars.

Christchurch police say they were called to a suspicious vehicle on Ferry Road shortly after 8am.

There were reports of nearly a dozen cars chasing a white van about 8.15am this morning.

They say when police approached the van the driver fled, hitting a police car in the process.

Police pursued the driver around the Woolston and Opawa suburbs where he hit several more police cars before being stopped.

The driver has been arrested and is facing a charge of aggravated failing to stop.

The chase ended in an arrest of the van driver, a man in his 20s.
