The road where a milk tanker went over the Rakaia Bridge in Canterbury is due to reopen about now.

Two people suffered minor injuries when the tanker collided with a car just before 6:30 this morning.

At least one person was taken to hospital.

The crash closed part of State Highway One, adding an hour to travel between Ashburton and Christchurch.

An NZTA spokesperson says there has been no structural damage to the bridge, and a temporary barrier will be put in place at the scene.

A heavy crane was needed to remove the tanker, which fell half off the bridge.

A Fire and Emergency communications spokesman said earlier there was no spillage of milk into the river.
