The Canterbury District Health Board are buying in fresh supplies of the measles vaccine as the outbreak continues to grow.

The number of measles cases in Canterbury isn't expected to slow anytime soon.

There are now 20 confirmed cases in the region.

The DHB says 18,000 doses of the vaccine are due to arrive this week, and it'll be ordering ordering more.

It's reminding people measles is highly infectious, and anyone who's not immunised and comes within two metres of someone who's infectious stands a 90% chance of getting it.

One in ten people who get measles will need hospital treatment and up to 30 percent will develop complications.

Measles is a serious and highly contagious viral disease where up to 30 per cent of those who catch it will develop complications.

Measles is spread through droplets in the air and through contact, so anyone unprotected who has been in the same room as someone with measles will likely get it.

Symptoms include; a respiratory type of illness with dry cough, runny nose, headache, temperature over 38.5C and feeling very unwell, and a red blotchy rash that starts on day 4-5 of the illness - usually on the face and moves to the chest and arms.
