North Canterbury locals are concerned a lack of crossings could see a child killed.

NZTA held a drop in session in Woodend last night to discuss safety concerns residents have about State Highway 1  which runs through the town.

Woodend Community Association president Mark Paterson says there are no crossings outside Woodend School, and kids face an ordeal trying to cross safely.

"There's a big problem with drivers not watching or stopping, I don't think it will be long until there's a serious incident."

Paterson hopes NZTA listen to their feedback and get a move on with making changes.
