Christchurch's SPCA is appealing for help from the public after five one-day-old puppies were dumped by a river.
They were found by a member of the public in some bushes on the Waipara River on Sunday.
An SPCA spokesperson says they were in a seed sack - and were so young their umbilical cords were still attached.
The five female pups have survived - and are being cared for around the clock by dedicated foster families.
SPCA inspectors want to hear from anyone who might know something about the puppies or the whereabouts of their mother.
