A measles outbreak is prompting a health warning for schools.

The Canterbury Medical Officer of Health has emailed schools requesting they warn parents about the outbreak.

Three measles case were first confirmed in Rangiora on February 26th. Since then, another seven have been confirmed, with at least two of those infected also from Rangiora.

It is not known where the other five people infected are based.

Waimairi School Principal Mike Anderson says they're prepared to take direction from Canterbury District Health Board.

"Measles is a notifiable disease so we follow the instructions of the Medical Officer for Health ."

He says the DHB relies on school records to stop the disease spreading.

"They want us to make sure the school knows if there have been any changes to the students' vaccination record between when they enrolled and now so we have up to date records."

Signs of measles include fever, cough and a runny nose.

Anyone born after 1968 can get vaccinated against measles for free.
