Banks Peninsula authorities have taken the first steps to make the area predator-free.
An understanding has been reached by several groups to work together to eliminate animal pests by 2050.
The groups include the Department of Conservation and Christchurch City Council, and aims to significantly contribute to the national goal of being predator free 2050 but that covers only the most damaging pests.
Conservation Minister Eugenie Sage says by signing the agreement, the groups are agreeing to work together and come up with a plan.
"The plans not in place yet. There's a lot of work to be done, but this is the start of people working together. We will only turn our biodiversity crisis in Aotearoa around if people work together."
