Anger from members of a Christchurch working men's club after the axing of the gym.

The Hornby Working Men's Club has ditched the gym in favour of an outdoor area and more bars - as part of a multi-million dollar redevelopment.

The gym has been a popular part of the club for over 25 years.

Gym-users spokesman Ian Hunter says the gym was on the plans before the AGM.

Members who went to the meeting thought it would survive.

'All we found out, a couple of weeks after that, a letter that was put on the wall of the gym saying that it was the board's decision and that it was a no go."

Hunter says the board is refusing to hold a special general meeting so they can have their say.
