There are calls for Christchurch residents to join the cause in getting rid of chlorinated water as soon as possible.

The Water Supply Improvement Update and Summer Conservation report is recommending water conservation measures over summer months, including only watering between 9pm and 6am on alternate days.

Mayor Lianne Dalziel said the city's water consumption is higher than it was at this time last year, and consumption has to be reduced so well heads can be fixed.

"We need people to come on board with a campaign to conserve. We don't want to impose restrictions, it's about people actually having a chance to do something."

She says the city needs a strong campaign to help residents understand why conserving water is being considered.

Dalziel has one suggestion.

"On the front page of the Christchurch City Council, daily consumption rates, with a comparison to where we were last year, and where we need to be able to take our wellheads offline to fix them."
