Public meetings will be held this week about the multi-million dollar expansion plans at the Port of Napier.

The proposal includes the construction of a new wharf, and the dredging of a larger shipping channel.

It's expected to cost $100 million and take years to finish.

The project's causing concern about its impact on coastal erosion, noise, traffic disruptions, and the cultural importance of nearby Pania Reef.

Chief executive Garth Cowie said they need to increase capacity to meet growth.

He said port staff will be available to discuss the proposal with the public, at a drop-in session today at the Hawke's Bay Fishing Club from 4pm.

A second meeting will be held tomorrow at the Westshore Surf Club.
