Canterbury is the second fastest growing region for tourism spending in the county.

The latest MBIE monthly regional tourism estimates show tourism spending for the Canterbury region is up 13 percent compared with the year to June 2017.

Canterbury Employers Chamber of Commerce CEO Leeann Watson says it's fantastic news.

"The year in year growth has been the second highest in growth behind Gisborne, so it is very encouraging news for the region."

Watson believes it is essential the region continues to invest in infrastructure to support tourists.

"It means great opportunities for all the new bars and hospitality providers in Christchurch and Canterbury and the tourism attractions in the region as well so the whole economy will benefit."
