The company that runs Go Wellington has been fined $22,000 for health and safety breaches, and ordered to pay $3,500 in reparations.

Wellington Transport Limited has been sentenced in the Wellington District Court.

The subsidiary of NZ Bus pleaded guilty to one charge of failing to take practicable steps to prevent harm in a workplace, after eight people were caught in bus doors in a four month period last year.

Two of those trapped were pregnant women.

The reparations go to seven of the eight victims, who will receive $500 each for emotional harm.

NZ Bus chief executive Zane Fulljames through the process efforts have been made to ensure Wellington buses are safe.

"There is a mindset around continuous improvement in health and safety as there quite rightly should be, when you're dealing with passengers on a day to day basis," he says.

"As New Zealand Bus, we take that obligation extremely seriously."
