For the third time this year, a protest has saved a native tree in Auckland.
A group rushed to the Huia Domain in West Auckland yesterday, when they were alerted a crew had arrived to fell a large Pohutukawa tree.
They stopped the work, which was being undertaken as the Council wants to get rid of a sea wall at the park, instead of upgrading it to prevent erosion.
HuiaSOS spokesperson Peter Dicks says council already removed some of the rocks preventing erosion at the base of the tree.
He says the seawall upgrade has been in the district plan since 2001 and they could lose up to 60 metres of park land if the work doesn't go ahead.
