There have been no problems following a south Auckland bus shelter opening its doors to the homeless last week.

A core group of rough sleepers have taken up the offer at the Manukau facility and obey the rules as numbers have risen to eleven men and two women.

Manukau Councillor Alf Filipaina says the rough sleepers take the opportunity to rest and all the feedback has been positive so far.

"It's so pleasing getting the updates saying 'we got them up at about six, and they had done all their beds, cleaned up, and they were out by 6.30.'"

The south Auckland community's also got on board to help out.

Pastors, Pacific media and residents have joined the cause, giving food and volunteering to serve food and monitor sleepers overnight.

Alf Filipaina says word has got around about the facility.

"The first night we just had a young couple come in, and they'd heard about it, and they just wanted to serve the food that first night," he says.
