A new technology which has doubled capacity at Queenstown Airport is officially being rolled out in Auckland.
Three satellite-guided flight approaches will be in use at the airport from mid 2015.
These allow pilots to fly in a curved approach and higher than when using traditional navigation.
Airways New Zealand's Pauline Lamb says an inter-agency team is also looking at designs for Wellington and Christchurch.
"Because they are far more fuel efficient, they do release less CO2 emissions into the atmosphere, they do allow us to build capacity for New Zealand in our airspace."
