Rates rise looms for Auckland

Updated 7.50am: Today's Auckland Council meeting will look at new ways to suck cash out of the city to fix its transport woes.

Newstalk ZB understands Mayor Len Brown is proposing ratepayers be hit with a temporary transport levy on top of their rates to get developments including the City Rail Link off the ground.

Transport blogger Matt Lowrie says says a temporary transport levy would raise about $300 million a year, which would buy a hell of a lot.

"The feedback from the long term plan was that people want transport sorted. People recognise it's a huge issue and they're willing to pay a bit for it."

He believes other options - such as tolling motorways, which would require a central government law change - would be too hard to get through and then implement.

Exactly what's on the cards won't be revealed before this morning's meeting, in a mayor's report on the draft 10 year budget.

The Mayor has refused a request to speak to us ahead of the meeting.

Today's meeting is also due to look at the controversial issue of ports expansion.
