Up to 85,000 homes in Auckland could be affected by a proposed ban on open fireplaces and old wood burners, The New Zealand Herald reports.
A draft air quality bylaw is due to be released next week.
It goes to the Council's regulatory and bylaws committee at the end of the month.
The rules are likely to be phased in over several years.
