Concern for ratepayers over SkyPath

UPDATED 12:30: The private sector is due to fund the construction of the SkyPath along Auckland Harbour Bridge, but there is concern ratepayers will pick up the tab if it all goes wrong.

The plan to build a cycling and walking path adjacent to the citybound clip-on lanes off the Auckland Harbour Bridge was approved yesterday.

Councillor Cameron Brewer said it looks like the Council will pick up any financial shortfall, if the number of people using the route drop below 75 percent of forecasts.

He is worried the scheme's backers are overly confident about its potential appeal.

"With the mayor himself saying it's a game changer...well if that is in fact the case then why should the residential ratepayer carry the risk?"

Cameron Brewer is calling on the Mayor to say no to any underwriting, saying the promoter should carry any risk.

A residents association on Auckland's North Shore will almost certainly appeal the decision to grant resource consent for SkyPath.

The Northcote Residents Association is firmly against the plan, and spokesman Kevin Clarke said their next step is clear - an appeal.

He believes this is the only option.
