Waiheke Island is getting a new supermarket.

Countdown has announced it's replacing the existing store with a new, larger building in Ostend, which will include five or six specialty shops.

The company says the new store is also expected to create 60 jobs, adding to the current 73.

Construction will start this month with the new store due to open in the first quarter of next year.

The existing supermarket has been damaged twice by fire - in June 2009 and December 2013.
