The home of New Zealand's largest light festival could ironically be about to lose its lighting through the rest of the year.

Thousands turned out to see Art in the Dark over the past four days, at Ponsonby's Western Park.

Waitemata Local Board wants to spruce up the park's playgrounds and facilities.

But it's also considering removing lampshades around the park, to discourage people from entering the park at night and putting their safety at risk.
