Hearings begin today on a controversial new bylaw about signs on city streets.
Auckland Council is consolidating 23 different sets of rules into a single bylaw about the display, placement and size of publicly visible signs.
Critics say if upstairs businesses on narrow pavements can't put out sandwich boards, they could go out of business.
But Auckland Council says the bylaw is balanced, and allows pedestrians to walk easily down the street.
