A video of a young man swimming laps in a rooftop water feature at an Auckland mall has sparked safety concerns.
The video, posted to an Instagram account called City Slikkas, shows a person in togs and goggles enter a glass bottomed pond on the Level 4 rooftop of Newmarket Westfield, completing laps as shoppers watch agog from below.
The reel, which so far has 1.5 million views, was posted with a caption saying, “just a daily reminder that no one cares”.
Several people in the comments highlighted the safety risks associated with the romp.
“OMG if that glass breaks, your [sic] dead. That is freaky as s***,” one wrote, pointing out a section of the pond lies above a lightwell that cuts through the multi-level shopping precinct.
Another commenter on the video questioned the quality of the water, saying: “That water’s probably not been touched since the mall opened.”

The pond sits above an atrium that runs through the mall.
Others on social media admitted they’d also found the body of water enticing. One user said, “the way I want to do this every time I’m in Newmarket”.
One comment reading, “stop because you just executed the biggest intrusive thought”, has been liked 207 times.
Responding to the Herald, City Slikkas said their stunts were intended to only “spread joy”.
“Not trying to piss anyone off we are a positive group” they said.
They confirmed the police were called to the mall after the stunt, but say “we managed to slick away quick”.
In early January, the account that posted this clip also uploaded footage of two young men plunging into the waters under the Auckland Harbour Bridge.
NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi labelled that jump as “illegal and dangerous”.
Other videos posted by the account show various escapades occurring around Auckland – including a group playing human bowling in Eden Terrace’s Basque Park and a person pouring 2 litres of milk into their trousers while standing in a Queen St intersection.
Scentre Group, which owns Westfield Newmarket, has been approached for comment.
