Auckland Council's environmental committee's unanimously voted to close all forested areas in the Waitākere Ranges Regional Park.
It's a significant step up in effort to stem the spread of Kauri dieback.
It's also voted to close high risk areas in the Hunua Ranges, which are currently uninfected by kauri dieback.
The closures are subject to consultation with affected parties, including local iwi and residents.
Mayor Phil Goff says he doesn't want to have to explain to his grandkids that he didn't do anything to save a species like Kauri.
"We cannot afford not to meet our obligations to do everything we can to ensure the survival of the kauri in our region."
Councillors heard from officials today that current measures to stop the spread of dieback were not working, and people are ignoring the rahui in place over the Ranges.
This would involve closing the entire forested area but not beaches, pasturelands and areas which would reach the requirement of a controlled area notice such as the Arataki Visitor Centre, the Arataki Nature Trail, Beveridge Track, Waitākere Dam Walk, Dreamlands Track and Exhibition Drive Walk.
This option would provide the highest level of kauri dieback protection.
