Updated 10.46pm: An attempt is being made to preserve six Pohutukawa trees, slated for felling at Western Springs .
It's to make way for State Highway 16 St Lukes interchange upgrade in Auckland.
A group calling itself Pohutukawa Savers will be protesting and making a submission at Auckland Transport board meeting today.
Five of the six trees opposite MOTAT, are at least 80 years old.
Christine Rose, spokeswoman for a group calling themselves Pohutukawa Savers, says if Auckland Transport decides to go ahead with cutting down the trees they'll take action.
"We will appeal it to the environment court, and we know that will slow up the process of integrating that local road with the Western ring route."
She says there are alternatives, and adds that even Cycle Action Auckland has come out saying they don't believe what is being claimed as cycling benefits will be delivered by Auckland Transport's proposal.
Spokeswoman Jolisa Gracewood says sacrificing these healthy, monumental trees would be a hasty, irreversible loss for little demonstrable gain.
