Guangzhou, also known as Canton, is the capital and most populous city of the province of Guangdong in southern China.
Christchurch is the only city, with a population of under one million that offers direct flights to Guangzhou. Christchurch mayor Lianne Dalziel says that’s because the South Island of New Zealand is a strong trading partner for China and direct flights have huge benefits for local exporters.
Christchurch Airport Chief Aeronautical and Commercial Officer, Justin Watson, says “this airport is still the fastest growing entry point for Chinese visitors coming to New Zealand and growing at twice the national average, plus statistics show visitors arriving here internationally stay longer, see more and spend more.”
Canterbury Mornings host Chris Lynch was invited by China Southern Airlines to Guangzhou to explore what is often described as the country’s most livable city.
