Andrew Dickens: Immigration papering over the cracks

Over the weekend a Roy Morgan poll came out that has been seized upon by opponents of the National Party.

The poll shows a decrease in support for National and a rise for Winston Peters and New Zealand First. The opposition says that finally the shine has gone off John Key and his party.

Now, steady on fellas: Don't ignore the fact that this is the first negative poll in three-and-a-half terms, and that the Roy Morgan poll is the least respected of them all. One survey does not a summer make.

But let's pretend this is actually something. What does it really say? With no lift in Labour, it says that some National Party supporters are unhappy but they can't bring themselves to vote for Labour so they'll take the least unpalatable option - which is New Zealand First. The poll is worse for Labour than it is for National.

So why are some National Party supporters falling out of love with the cult of Key?

The flag for one. Winston has been adamantly opposed to change from Day One and they like that. He appeals to conservatives (with a small c).

But I also think they're sick of the stresses in our society caused by immigration which Winston constantly harps on about. House prices, traffic, pressures on our schools and our hospitals. Infrastructure failure basically. That's why there's a surprising admiration for Trump here. A man who talks about the problems but has no solutions.

On The Nation this weekend it was pointed out to John Key that if you take away the comings and goings of New Zealanders we end out with a figure of 70,000 immigrants settling in the country in the past year. And it shows no sign of stopping.

It's a good point. We can't take them if we're not geared up to take them.

Labour believes that but can't vocalise it. Amongst leader Andrew Little's floundering last week about Indian chefs, he made one good point. Take immigration out of the economy and New Zealands growth rate was actually around 1 per cent - which is terrible.

Immigration is being used to paper the cracks. The GDP figures last week show the service industries make up 70 percent of our economy. They're living off the 30 percent actually doing something. I'm one of them. Broadcasting is service. Accounting. Lawyering. Retail. We all need someone to make the money so we can provide a service. Imagine if the ratio was reversed and our service industry comprised 30 per cent. That would be a rock star economy.

If the Roy Morgan poll says anything to the government -  it says don't change the flag.

But more importantly it says New Zealanders are worried about importing people as dollar signs. Not for financial reasons but because it disrupts our comfort level.

But to be honest the responsibility lies with those people who call themselves real New Zealanders.

We need to have a long hard look at how we make our money and to come up with some fresh ideas.
