NICI WICKES: Food

The  latest Forest & Bird Best Fish Guide to sustainable seafood is back – bigger and better than ever and available as an app. This newly updated mobile app is New Zealand’s only comprehensive and independent guide to sustainable seafood. It will help consumers make decisions on which species they should buy or avoid to ensure our oceans are sustainably managed. The 2017 guide ranks more than 84 commercial seafood species, and uses more information than ever before. For the first time, some species have more than one ranking, depending on where and how they were caught.  http://www.forestandbird.org.nz/what-we-do/publications/-best-fish-guide

It's inspired me to make these wonderful Smoked Fish Parcels!  The recipe and a short video of Nici's smoked fish is on her Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/#!/niciwickes

LYNDA HALLINAN: Gardening

29 days until Christmas which means that the garden will inevitably take a backburner for the rest of the year. But it's not too late to get stuck in and sort out your vege patch for summer.

1. It's not too late to sow dwarf and climbing beans. Sow direct & watch out for slugs and snails when the seeds sprout.

2. It's not too late to plant courgettes and cucumbers but it is too late for pumpkins other than Golden Nugget and other small fruiters.

3. It's not too late to plant basil and Italian parsley but give chervil, dill and coriander a rest as they hate the heat & will just bolt to seed if sown now and neglected over the festive season.

4. Sow mesclun salad direct, but give Iceberg lettuces a skip as they also hate the heat and tend to collapse in the peak of summer.

5. Never too late to weed!

BOB CAMPBELL: Wine

More intense than the regular label with very pure pineapple, lemon grass, mineral and passion fruit flavours. Ethereal wine that’s made with a light touch.

CATHERINE RAYNES: Books

The Sellout - Paul Beatty, Allen & Unwin $28

I'll Take You There by Wally Lamb, Hutchinson $37

ANDREW DICKENS: Music

Emeli Sande "Long Live The Angels"

18 epics all in a row.  Each one cinematic in their scale and that strangely is the problem.  Most start low and quiet and build to full gospel choir crescendo.  Separately they’re all pretty jaw dropping.  Collectively they’re exhausting.  I thought she was the new Adele when I first heard her.  Adele has more subtlety.  7/10
