NICI WICKES: Food
What’s going to be hot on the bbq for this summer?
Sauces & marinades – these will be hot and spicy drawing inspiration from Korean and Philippine cuisine
Chargrilled veggies, more veggies less protein in general – we’ve seen loads of roasted cauli in restaurants so my pick is this will make its way to our grills
Lesser know cuts – think flat iron steak (top blade) or the latest terres major - muscle in shoulder that is incredibly tender
Gadgets – pizza stones so you can have pizza on the bbq, and rise of portable bbqs (I think we’ll see a decline in charcoal bbq too as people go for easier option)
Nici's recipe for a marinade sauce that goes with meat, poultry, seafood and vegetables is on our website and for more inspiration visit http://www.niciwickes.com/ or her Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/#!/niciwickes

LYNDA HALLINAN: Gardening
Labour Weekend, the official start of the gardening season, and time to get stuck in planting anything you want, because (fingers crossed) the weather should have stabilised enough to safely transplant tomatoes, chillies, basil and all your other mainstay summer crops.

1. Plant tomatoes. Transplant carefully as tomato stems are fairly fragile. Dig a good sized hole (about the size of a bucket) and add some general garden fertiliser. Until tomatoes start flowering, their main fertiliser requirement is for nitrogen for leaf growth. Once the flowers appear, however, start feeding with a potassium rich fertiliser. Stake tomatoes well, either with a wooden stake, or several bamboo stakes tied together at the top to form a teepee.

2. Sow zucchini, pumpkins and cucumbers direct. Sow in rich soil and water well until established. If you are planting potted seedlings from the garden centre, keep in mind that because these plants have quite large leaves, they tend to wilt when transplanted, so don't panic. It's best to wait until dusk to transplant them instead, so they have the night to recover. Or shade them with an upturned bucket for the day if you must plant them out in the morning.

3. Pot up chillies and eggplants so you can position them in the hottest spots in your garden. Plant out basil seedlings now too, and protect them with slug bait.

4. If you want to grow melons, good luck to you! I've never managed even a single decent sized watermelon in 20 years of trying. They are my nemesis crop. But they can be sown now, as can rockmelons and honey dew melons, which are easier to get to fruiting size.

5. After planting, mulch with compost to keep plant roots cool and trap in all the moisture of spring. Mulching also keeps weeds down while you wait for your crops to bulk up.

BOB CAMPBELL: Wine
I recently tasted a large range of champagne and sparkling wines at the NZ International Wine Show. Here are a few of my favourites in different price categories.

Champagne
Bollinger and Taittinger are top of my hit parade but I have never been known to refuse a glass of champagne, whatever the label. Top champagne at the NZ International Wine Show was not well very known Ayala Brut Majeur NV, and it is a fantastic wine with a price tag of around $80.

NZ Methode over $30
The trophy winning wine at the NZ International Wine Show was Hunter’s 2011 Miru Miru Reserve with a moderate price tag of $34 making it good value in my books. Another of my favourites in this category is Deutz 2013 Blanc de Blancs $32.99

NZ Methode over $20
Akarua Brut NV offers good value at $25-30 as does Daniel le Brun NV Brut for around $25. The Akarua is fresher and more delicate while the Le Brun is richer and more complex – it shows a little more bottle age.

Sparkling Under $20
I like Italian Prosecco which you can often find in the sub-$20 category. Bosca Five Star Prosecco offers value at $18.99.

If you prefer to buy local Verde NV Brut is a very satisfying sparkler with a friendly price tag of $16.99. If you really want a great bargain try Lindauer special Reserve Blanc de Blanc - it’s a cut above the regular Lindauer label and retails for a modest $12.99.

CATHERINE RAYNES: Books
Conclave by Robert Harris, Penguin $38
Declared by Brendon McCullum, Upstart Press $50

ANDREW DICKENS: Music
The Naked and Famous 'Simple Forms' - Andrew's verdict: 7/10
They’ve lost the indie pop for something more mainstream which is a little disappointing but that’s only on a few tracks, like Higher. Elsewhere the edge and the all the massiveness of their trademark wall of synth is still there with a certain frisson because the couple have split, for instance in Last Forever. Pretty good 7/10
