A 13-year-old has been apprehended by Police after a group of youths went on a rampage in a Far North town.

LISTEN ABOVE: Larry Williams talks to Tony Taylor, who runs Kaikohe's community patrol, about the issues of youth crime.

They helped themselves to boxes of beer from a Kaikohe liquor store and tried to smash their way into a service station.

Businessman Tony Taylor, who runs the town's community patrol, told Larry Williams he's had a gutsful.

He said it's not a Kaikohe problem, but a national issue, and the youth justice system needs more grunt so it can deal with it.

Mr Taylor said more Police are also urgently needed in the region.
