Ten sites around the Bay of Plenty and Gisborne have been selected to build orchards on, with the first vines being planted in winter of 2018.

CEO of Te Tumu Paeroa Jamie Tuuta says this was about making sure Maori land owners didn't miss out.

Mr Tuuta said apart from the obvious financial benefit, it allows owners to connect with their land and help the local communities.

He said some will argue there are also environmental returns and guaranteed employment benefits.
