Rachel Smalley: 2016 - The year of...

What will you remember 2016 for?

It's been quite a year on the news front.

Terrorism, again. Well, that has dominated the year and we've seen attacks all over the world. Brussels. The Orlando nightclub attack. Istanbul. the horror of Nice. The Dallas police shootings. And now, of course, Berlin.

For many people, this will be a particularly challenging Christmas.

There was an attempted coup in Turkey, and the conflicts in Syria and Iraq have raged on, unchecked. And Russia, in particular, has cemented itself in Syria and as the key supporter of Basha al-Assad.

Politics. The change in our political world has been seismic, hasn't it?

Brexit.

Donald Trump.

Helen Clark challenging to become the U.N Secretary General.

There was a change of Prime Minister in Australia. Again. This time an elected change, though, so that's novel isn't it? Yes, the Aussies went to the polls.

And here, well John Key said I'm done. Thanks for having me.

If someone had said at the start of this year that we'd have a new Prime Minister by the end of it, I don't think many of us would have believed it.

But we've got quite good at rolling with the political punches this year, haven't we?

The UK left Europe. America put Trump in the White House. And Key pulled a blinder and resigned on his own terms.

We lost some extraordinary people. Arguably one of our greatest cricketers of all time, certainly our finest batsman, lost his battle with cancer -- Martin Crowe left this earth.

David Bowie did too. So did Prince and Muhammad Ali. And Leonard Cohen and Alan Rickman are no longer with us either.

The ground shook, again. Several times. Bloody earthquakes, I hear you saying.

First Christchurch has the Valentine's Day quake, then the East Cape was rattled and a month ago the Kaikoura quake caused damage far and wide.

The Shaky Isles strikes again.

Teina Pora was compensated. So was David Bain although we weren't allowed to call it that.

And as always, there was a bit of Reality TV to take your mind off life.

We were blessed -- or otherwise -- with yet another round of the Bachelor, and we had the Real Housewives of Auckland too. I know, I'd rather put pins in my eyes than watch it too.

And Brangelina. The world's most beautiful couple, Brad and Ange sadly went there separate ways.

Rugby! The Irish only beat the All Blacks for the first time ever. That was a stonker of a game in Chicago. And who tried to bug the All Blacks in Australia? Remember the device that was found in the chair. Odd.

The Olympics. We bagged a record number of medals -- our women in particular were on fire in Rio.

And we found out the Russians had been involved in a state-sponsored doping programme for years. The sods.

So what as the biggest story of the year, do you think?

Mine's a toss up between Brexit and Trump, but I think Trump edges ahead.

He is the story of the year.

Time Magazine called him the President of the Divided States of America.

But it's bigger then that. What impact will he have on the world?

We'll start to see that in 2017... but for me, his rise from Reality TV star to U.S President is extraordinary.
