Jacinda Ardern is being described as well qualified to provide a fresh face on the Labour leadership team.
The newly elected Mt Albert MP is considered a sitter to replace Annette King as Deputy Leader. Labour's caucus votes on Tuesday.
Co-editor of Newsroom Tim Murphy told Rachel Smalley Ms Ardern is a strong and qualified politician.
"She's got as good a background as any. She worked for [Helen] Clark in the prime minister's office. When she was overseas she was working at the British Department of Business and Enterprise. She's not an airhead just because she smiles."
He said Andrew Little's move to replace Annette King with Ms Ardern shows he's willing to "deploy John Key-esque approaches to what Key used to call 'whatever it takes'".
Murphy said after losing three elections in a row, Labour should leave no stone unturned.
"You want to take every step, and Jacinda with her firm name recognition and her youth appeal will give them that."
