The Queen has sent a message of condolence to the Governor-General of New Zealand following the powerful earthquake that struck the country leaving two people dead.
The magnitude 7.8 earthquake hit New Zealand's South Island just after midnight, local time, on Monday, with the epicentre near tChristchurch.
The Queen said in her message to the Governor-General Dame Patsy Reddy: "Prince Philip and I were shocked to hear news of the severe earthquakes that struck on Monday.
"I send my condolences to the families of those who were killed and to the people whose homes and businesses have been affected.
"Our thoughts are with you at this time."
