Accusations are flying as MPs continue to debate legislation advancing the Government's social housing reforms progresses through Parliament.

Building and Housing Minister Nick Smith is accusing Labour MP Phil Twyford of a flip flop.

He said in a 2014 speech Mr Twyford said he supported a more diverse housing sector and the transfer of houses from Housing New Zealand.

"And now he's got the cheek to roll down the house, do a flip-flop, and them somehow say he has a different position."

But Mr Twyford's hit back saying the social housing changes are a charter for corruption.

"It gives unfettered powers to two ministers to dispose of, any way they see fit, billions of dollars of taxpayer-owned assets."

Labour MP Sue Moroney's seeking assurances tenants in privately run social housing will still be eligible for income related rent subsidies.

"Cause if they do not attract the income-related rent subsidy, then those new owners will want those tenants out as quick as they can possibly march them out the door. And the way they will do that is they'll just increase their rent."

Under the Bill income related rent subsidies will be available to registered community housing providers.
