Labour is accusing the Government of abandoning our representative to the United Nations Security Council.

New Zealand won a non-permanent seat in 2014, and is currently just over half way through its term.

Labour's foreign affairs spokesperson David Shearer has traveled to New York to meet with diplomats. He said we're earning rave reviews for our performance on the council, by successfully walking the difficult line to keep alliances, but also make a difference.

But he said he doesn’t think the public would know any of this from the Government's silence.

“I don’t think there’d be a person listening to this programme that could tell you what’s going on at the Security Council,” Mr Shearer told Newstalk ZB. “I don’t know what Murray McCully is doing or what the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is doing.”

Mr Shearer said there’s a “responsibility” to “tell the story” of what our diplomats are doing.

“We’re doing a really good job and we’re being well respected,” he said.
