Govt's new housing policy concerning exporters

Exporters are concerned about the impact the new housing policy will have on our ability to be part of the Trans-Pacific Partnership.

The Government said it's found a way to ban foreigners buying homes in New Zealand without breaching free trade agreements except with Singapore.

It will be classifying houses as sensitive.

Export New Zealand executive director Catherine Beard said they want as few obstacles as possible going into the APEC meeting.

"I expect that the government has taken advice from officials and officials have tested this out with our trading nation partners."

She said their big concern was that this policy would impact on our ability to be part of the Trans-Pacific Partnership.

"This is possibly a solution that solves the problem. We certainly would like them to be able to go to the APEC meeting and talk with the other TPP countries with as few obstacles in the way of doing the deal as possible."

The policy is expected to be introduced before the end of the year.
