Living wage advocates will gather at Parliament today to congratulate the new Government.

All three parties in the Labour-led coalition have committed to paying public sector workers and contractors a living wage of at least $20.20 an hour.

Living Wage New Zealand convener, Annie Newman said for many low wage workers, the boost in pay can't come soon enough.

"They can not provide decent food for their families. They struggle to pay the rent. They don't get to take holidays."

Members of various community groups and unions will meet with members of the new Government this afternoon.

The first increase in the minimum wage to $16.50 will take effect in April next year, with the goal to hit $20 an hour by 2021.
