An apparent change of heart from the government over the Awaroa beach purchase is being welcomed by the Labour Party.
The Department of Conservation had originally ruled out buying the land and incorporating it into the surrounding Abel Tasman National Park.
But Conservation Minister Maggie Barry is now signalling it might help out given the interest and success in the GiveALittle fundraising done by those who want the beach put in public hands.
Labour Leader Andrew Little said he's pleased to hear the reports the Government might make a top-up gesture.
"I think that's very encouraging. I think that it is in the spirit of what tens of thousands of New Zealanders have done by contributing to it, saying 'we want to keep this in New Zealand hands'," Little said.
A private competitive tender will be made tomorrow by the fundraising campaign.Â
People can still pledge to the cause, but since the $2 million was reached the total has been hidden until the tender process is complete.
After it's wrapped up, the project owners claim they will be completely transparent about the total amount raised.
No pledges will be processed unless the tender is successful.
