There's concern Kiwis might find their internet browsing data being made public, now that US lawmakers have voted to overturn an online privacy regulation issued during the final months of the Obama administration.
The move allows internet service providers to sell the browsing habits of their customers.
The CEO of IT company Gorilla Technologies, Paul Spain, said the change means Kiwis who visit US sites could have their browsing history exposed.
"There are all sorts of implications in terms of what we access and how we access it and that being sold off to other parties."
Mr Spain said in particular it could affect people who use virtual private networks or VPNs to route their connections through the US to access US content.
"So when that happens you are seeing all your content going through a US-based internet service provider, and then they might well sell that information off."
