Families are being urged to be vigilant around driveways, after another young boy died after being hit by a car in a private driveway near Tokoroa this morning.

Despite the efforts of family, neighbours and emergency responders to save him, he died at the scene.

Safe Kids Aotearoa director Ann Weaver said it's a tragedy that can happen to anyone.

"We know it's the summer months when we it's usual for young children to be wanting to be outside, to be playing around our properties."

Ms Weaver said the incident could have happened to anyone, and her heart goes out to the family.

She said anyone who is looking after a child must know where they are at all times.

"Young preschool children move very fast and often we don't know where they are, where they are one minute they're not there the next."

About five children die in driveway accidents every year in New Zealand.
