Updated 4:30pm: One person's critically injured after a fiery crash that has closed State Highway 1 near Taupo.

A second person has moderate injuries after two cars collided around 3.15pm

One car is reported to have burst into flames.

Police warn there are traffic delays and are asking drivers to be patient.

Police say traffic in Auckland is so bad everywhere, they're advising drivers to just stay at home.

All traffic north of the bridge is heavily congested and is moving at snail's pace.

There's been a crash between Archer Road and Wairau Road in Glenfield holding up traffic.

And another crash on Kaipara Coast Highway in Helensville with the vehicles involved blocking traffic.

Motorists travelling over the Kaimai Range between Waikato and Bay of Plenty are also experiencing major holdups after a three-way crash blocked the main route.

Two cars and a van collided around midday, blocking State Highway 29.

Police are now urging motorists to use alternative routes while contractors clear the road.

Meanwhile, in Taranaki, people driving along SH3 face delays after a crash near Inglewood, south of New Plymouth at 12.30pm.
