Immigration New Zealand may be willing to negotiate the deportation of nine Indian students.
The students could be forced out of the country after their visa documents were falsified by dodgy agents. Immigration New Zealand gave no timeline for the deportations - leaving the students to wait anxiously.
But now it wants to meet with the student's lawyer, Alistair McClymont, on Friday. He said the meeting is a good sign.
"The fact they have requested a meeting would seem to indicate they would maybe like to negotiate some type of peaceful settlement, which would not require any arrest or detention."
Mr McClymont said he will advise them on the students' intentions and try to work out a solution.
"Basically want to see what Immigration New Zealand's position is and what they intend to do. The students really have nothing to lose."
