UPDATED 8:09am: One of New Zealand's most high-profile criminal lawyers is humbled by his inclusion in the New Year Honours List.
Peter Williams talks to Alex Mason
Peter Williams, QC, has been made a Knight Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit.
After more than 60 years in the legal profession Sir Peter feels very privileged, saying the honour came right out of the blue.
He says it is a representative honour, one he accepts on behalf of the many people who have worked for penal reform over a long period of time.
He says he's always believed everyone has a right to basic human dignity, legal representation and a fair trial.
"I don't believe in cruelty, I don't believe in claustrophobia, I don't believe in lashing people with unnecessary prejudice."
