A Queensland councillor has started a petition to force Dick Smith stores to honour gift cards they sold before the firm's collapse.

The electronics giant's receivers are refusing to honour vouchers or refund deposits on goods.

Ipswich councillor Paul Tully, who started the Change.org petition today, says Ferrier Hodgson has embarrassed those who gave and received gift cards over Christmas.

He said receivers have been cavalier and unreasonable and should hang their heads in shame.
