Top sporting administrator Therese Walsh headlines the sporting names recognised in today's Queen's Birthday Honours.

The local organising boss of this year's successful Cricket World Cup has been named a Dame, having also been heavily involved in the organisation of the Rugby World Cup in 2011.

Walsh said it's a humbling feeling, and it was a dream to be involved in both events.

"When you open that envelope and see it, it's quite overwhelming," she said. " For me it's very special because I've been involved in a lot of things that a lot of New Zealanders have got involved in."

"Seeing New Zealand come together both times and show the rest of the world that we're as good as anybody else is the bit that makes me feel very proud."

With tournament duties wrapping up over the next month, Walsh wants to remain involved in sport in some way.

"I've worked in it for over a decade now and I'd like to think that might continue in some form - I don't know how yet. I'm in discussions with few people about a few things."

New Zealand's success on the field in the Cricket World Cup has also been recognised, with Black Caps captain Brendon McCullum and coach Mike Hesson both named Officers of the Order of Merit.

NZOC boss Kereyn Smith and multisport icon Richard Ussher have both also received honours.
